Castle Crags Gets An Upgrade

Ian sends The Flying Monkey 5.13b

On August 1st Shasta Base Camp team member iaN k@z, completed the first ascent of 'The Flying Monkey' in the Marble Gully of Beck's Tower. He gives the route the grade of 5.13b, making it the hardest freeclimb yet established in the Castle Crags Wilderness. The Flying Monkey ascends the Marble Gully up the polished granite wall just right of Marbelous and features powerful bouldery climbing and technical gear placements. The highlight of the climb is a technical roof sequence which culminates in a dyno to a jug. This climb is 120' has three bolts and is protected mostly by tcu's.
Other additions to the crags are 'Don't Give Up The Fight' a steep 5.12b which sports 8 bolts and the biggest holds you could ever fall off of, and the mega classic 'Tagged' an incredible mix of steep crack and face climbing on a wildly exposed double arete. A couple of other worthy routes on a more moderate level are the 'Dirty Bus Driver' 5.10 and 'Stone Roots' 5.10a. Both routes feature steep climbing and technical gear placements and are destined to be Crags Classics.

Logic's Language(V8), Mt. Shasta boulderingPeter sends Logic's Language V8

Peter, a local mountain guide for SWS, completed the first full traverse of the South Fork Boulder(aka 'The Cube') on Sunday July 20th. The new boulder problem dubbed "logic's Language" traverses clockwise around the boulder and never uses the upper lip of the boulder. Peter gives the problem the grade of V8, making it one of the hardest established boulder problems in the area. Last year Peter also completed the first full traverse of the Byron's Boulder, on the Everett Memorial. This problem traverses Byron's Boulder counterclockwise and is rated V5.

Team Shatsafari member sends 5.13 at Castle Crags State Park!

On July 6, team member iaN k@z completed the first ascent of "Marbelous" 5.13a(r) a 115' Overhanging flake system in The Marble Gully of Beck's Tower. This route is truly a milestone for rock climbing at Castle Crag's State Park, as it is the hardest route done ground up with no bolts. Marbelous is one of many new school routes which have been developed recently by team Shastafari members iaN k@z, Steve Webber, and Styles Larsen. Some other new editions are Webbers "Impeach The President" a necky 10c with bolts added after the first ascent for the sanity of future ascents, "Jugs On The Horizon" a five star two pitch 5.11b, Larsen's "Bush Doctor"5.10b, a fun heady little warm up for the gully and the ultra classic, "Knot The End" 5.11c.

Box Canyon Project

Shasta Base Camp crew hooked up with some local boaters and Yates Gear of Redding to do some much needed repair on the access trail to Box Canyon. Yates, a local manufacturer of climbing and technical rescue equipment, donated 600' of static line to replace the old rope which had been there for most of the last decade and had obviously seen better days! The Base Camp crew along with Michael Kirwin, of Osprey Kayak School, and Sean Malee, a local kayaker, headed down in the evening on April 18th, replaced the rope, cleaned, and did some maintance on the trail. The evening culminated with a beer and stories of close calls and bad falls on approach trails.
